Biography
Hello! My name is Nikolas Vincent and I am a professional mosaic artist. I have always had a love for art but never thought about pursuing it professionally. It was not until I left college that I realized my true passion lies in the art world. As I began, I experimented with many different mediums and tools including oil, charcoal, acrylics, chalk, water color, spatulas, brushes and photography. While I am adept at all, I wanted to stand apart from other artists and create art that is bold and compelling; this led me to my preferred medium of paper mosaics. I went out of my comfort zone and completed my first paper mosaic, Sin of Pride, in January of 2019. The process to create this piece was so intensive that I considered giving up on the piece, and mosaics, entirely. However, I persevered and Sin of Pride has become my most personally valued piece - it was the stepping stone that led me on the path to becoming a full time mosaic artist and more importantly, it proves to myself and others that I deserve a place in the art community.
Work Process
The process to create one of my mosaic pieces is more involved than one might realize. First, I spend weeks at a time collecting hundreds of used magazines, and then flip through every page looking for and cutting out blocks of colors that might be useful to me. Once I decide on the subject, I then hand cut every single piece of paper from the color blocks – this can be over one thousand pieces of paper for just one piece! I then build the frame and stretch my own canvas onto the frame. I continue by priming the canvas with Gesso and then sketch the design. After that, I am ready to start placing paper; I hand place and glue every individual piece. Every step is personally and meticulously hand done by me. This process can take up to 30 hours or more per artwork. It is a very long and tedious process, but also very rewarding. And the result is a beautiful and original mosaic art piece!
